The Fall of Man, and Sin and Its Punishment
Our first parents, being seduced by the subtlety and temptation of Satan, sinned in eating the forbidden fruit (a). God was pleased to permit this sin of theirs, according to his wise and holy counsel, because his purpose was, through it, to glorify himself (b).
By this sin they fell from their original righteousness and communion with God (c), and so became dead in sin (d) and wholly defiled in all the parts and faculties of soul and body (e).
Since they were the root of all mankind, the guilt of this sin was imputed to (f) – and the same death in sin and corrupted nature were conveyed to – all their posterity descending from them by ordinary generation (g).
From this original corruption, by which we are utterly disinclined, disabled, and antagonistic to all that is good (h) and wholly inclined to all that is evil (i), all actual transgressions proceed (k).
During this life, this corruption of nature remains in those who are regenerated (l). Even though it is pardoned and put to death through Christ, yet both this corruption of nature and all its expressions are in fact really sin (m).
Every sin – both original and actual – is a transgression of the righteous law of God and contrary to it (n). Therefore, every sin in its own nature brings guilt upon the sinner (o), on account of which he is bound over to the holy wrath of God (p) and the curse of the law (q). Consequently, he is subject to death (r), with all miseries – spiritual (s), temporal (t), and eternal (u).
