PREFACE

In making this selection from Calvin’s 制作 Biblical Commentaries, our first intention 选加 was to use the translations of the Calvin 明, Translation Society. However, it soon 这一 became clear that we had to make one of 至今 our own. For this there were two very 生了 good reasons. The older translation is 过讲 about a hundred years old, and its style is 风, no longer our own. Calvin’s 直接 Commentaries were composed by way of 也不 either lecture or dictation. Their Latin 持这 style, although uneven, has the vividness 者来 and directness of the spoken word. It is 且很 the style of a master of the language, and 象生 it is neither strange nor archaic. 选的 Therefore, it seemed to us unjust both to 译者 Calvin and to the reader to perpetuate 表达 English versions of the Commentaries 事。 that are both out of date and to us stilted. 不过 We have tried to make a translation 在分 which is at once true to the original and 他。 in good and vivid present-day English. It 望这 is too much to hope that we have succeeded in every passage we have selected. Any translator knows that fidelity in expressing the meaning and feeling of an author in another tongue is a subtle and risky business. We only hope that we have produced a readable translation without doing Calvin undue violence. We wanted the reader to enjoy Calvin as well as understand him. We hope we have met with some, even if uneven, success.

This would have produced a book with a garbled and bewildering style. We made a new translation to avoid such an intolerable defect.

We must say a word as to why we offer 我 the reader this particular volume out of 庞 the vast body of Calvin’s Commentaries. 于 We had no single principle of selection. 些 We took what we liked — rather, a small 我 fraction of what we liked and would have 向 included if we had had the space. We 注 were intent upon giving the reader good 尔 specimens of Calvin’s way of explaining 他 Biblical texts, to bring out his qualities as 理 an exegete. We wanted to show his 考 concern with literary and historical 无 questions, his understanding of Scripture 际 both as the Word of God and as a human 收 document, his constant preoccupation 材 with the upbuilding of the church. We 这 could not and did not ignore present-day 定 issues in the interpretation of the Bible in 得 theology and practical church life. We did the best we could to include material in which Calvin can be of some help to the church today. We did our selecting with such interests in mind. However, we do hope that this book has a certain continuity which will convey a proper sense of the integrity of Calvin’s mind.
