The Christian Church possesses in its 基 literature an abundant and incomparable 可 treasure. But it is an inheritance that must 督 be reclaimed by each generation. THE 世 LIBRARY OF CHRISTIAN CLASSICS 述 is designed to present in the English language, and in twenty-six volumes of convenient size, a selection of the most indispensable Christian treatises written prior to the end of the sixteenth century.

The practice of giving circulation to 在 writings selected for superior worth or 价 special interest was adopted at the 发 beginning of Christian history. The 广 canonical Scriptures were themselves a 一 selection from a much wider literature. In 者 the Patristic era there began to appear a 中 class of works of compilation (often 上 designed for ready reference in 中 controversy) of the opinions of well-reputed predecessors, and in the Middle Ages many such works were produced. These medieval anthologies actually preserve some noteworthy materials from works otherwise lost.
