一、凡蒙有效恩召而被重生的人,上帝既然在他們裡面創造新靈和新心,就更加因基督受死與復活的功勞,使他們個人真正具體成聖,這是藉著道,就住在他們裡面的聖靈做成的。罪身的權勢被毀壞 ,肉體的各種邪情私慾逐漸變衰弱、 被治死 ,他們則愈來愈在諸般的恩典上活過來、 得堅固,以致行出活出真正的聖潔﹔人非聖潔不能見主。
Those who are effectually called and regenerated, having a new heart and a new spirit created in them, are further sanctified – truly and personally – through the power of Christ’s death and resurrection (a), by his Word and Spirit dwelling in them (b). The dominion of the whole body of sin is destroyed (c), its various lusts are more and more weakened and put to death (d), and those called and regenerated are more and more enlivened and strengthened in all saving graces (e), leading to the practice of true holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord
二、成聖雖然是遍及到人每個部分的工作,但在今生,這成聖還是不完全,在人裡面每個地方都還有些殘餘的敗壞﹔ 因此在人裡面有持續不斷、無法化解的爭戰,就是情慾和聖靈相爭,聖靈和情慾相爭。
This sanctification, although imperfect in this life, is effected in every part of man’s nature (g). Some remnants of corruption still persist in every part (h), and so there arises a continual and irreconcilable war – the flesh warring against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh (i).
三、在這場爭戰中,那殘存的敗壞雖然可能暫時甚佔優勢,但是基督成聖的靈不斷加力量給人,那蒙上帝重生的新人性靠這力量必定得勝﹔ 所以聖徒會在恩典中長進,敬畏上帝得以成聖。
Although in this war the remaining corruption may strongly prevail for a time (k), yet, through the continual supply of strength from the sanctifying Spirit of Christ, the regenerate nature overcomes (l), and so the saints grow in grace (m), perfecting holiness in the fear of God (n).
